What Are Study Gaps and Their Types
A “study gap” refers to a break between stages of education (e.g., between bachelor’s and master’s studies usually)
Employment Gap: A period of unemployment between jobs or before returning to studies which is most of the time acceptable.
How Gaps Happen:
- For undergraduates: Any breaks between grades 10→12 or 12→Bachelor’s counts as a study gap.
- For postgraduates: Break between degree completion and program start also counts.
Common gap experiences include:
- Immersion – Cultural exchange or language learning.
- Volunteer – Community service or humanitarian projects.
- Personal – Self-discovery, passion projects, travel .
- Academic – Preparatory courses or language studies.
Why It Matters: Universities abroad often ask for explanations of study gaps. Fill them constructively—highlight skills, growth, or relevant experience to strengthen applications.
